The Orange Cat Spy

orangezombiespinachspy

Lily was the best spy in all of Maple Street. At least, that's what she told herself every Tuesday and Thursday when she wore her dad's old trench coat and carried a magnifying glass. Her partner was an orange cat named Cheddar, who mostly slept through their missions but had excellent whiskers for detecting danger.

One afternoon, while spying on her neighbor's garden from behind a tall bush, Lily saw something strange. Mr. Green was planting rows and rows of spinach. But when the moon came up, the spinach plants started to wiggle! Lily gasped as one plant pulled itself out of the ground and started walking toward her house.

"Cheddar!" Lily whispered. "We have a zombie spinach situation!"

The spinach creature - which looked surprisingly like Mr. Green wearing a green costume - shuffled down the street. Lily and Cheddar followed at a safe spy distance. They trailed the zombie past the library, around the corner, and right up to Mrs. Patterson's front door.

Mrs. Patterson, who was ninety-two years old and couldn't garden anymore, opened her door. "Oh goodness!" she exclaimed. "Is that you, Mr. Green?"

The zombie nodded and held out a basket of fresh spinach.

"You walked all the way here in your Halloween costume just to bring me vegetables?" Mrs. Patterson laughed. "Come inside, silly zombie! I'll make us both some soup!"

Lily watched from behind a tree and smiled. Sometimes spies discovered the best secrets - like how a zombie could just be a kind neighbor in a costume, and how spinach wasn't scary at all, but something that made people strong enough to walk miles for a friend.

Cheddar meowed and rubbed against Lily's leg. Their first big mystery was solved. But tomorrow? Tomorrow they'd investigate whether the orange flowers by the school could talk.
