The Orange Cat Algorithm

Maya's iphone buzzed with another notification from the group chat she definitely wasn't supposed to be in. Three weeks ago, she'd been nobody—just a sophomore who spent lunch period lurking on social media like a total spy, gathering intel on kids who didn't know she existed. Then her neighbor's orange cat had photobombed her selfie at exactly the right moment, and somehow the photo had gone viral. Now she was in. The Pyramid—the secret group chat where the popular girls planned everything—had somehow added her by mistake. Or maybe not. Either way, she'd stumbled into the school's social hierarchy like someone crashing a VIP party.

"You coming to Sarah's tonight?" Chloe typed. Maya stared at the screen. Three weeks ago, Chloe wouldn't have known Maya existed. Now Maya was seeing things no outsider was supposed to see—the drama, the secrets, the carefully constructed lies that kept the Pyramid intact. She'd become an accidental spy into a world she'd spent years watching from the outside.

That afternoon, Maya found the orange cat—Mr. Whiskers, according to his owner—sleeping on her front porch. The creature that had accidentally launched her into the in-crowd purred as she scratched behind his ears. Some of the girls in the Pyramid seemed genuinely cool. Others? They were messy and complicated, nothing like their perfect instagram feeds. They talked behind each other's backs, stressed about college, fought with parents. Real stuff.

Maya typed back: "Yeah. I'll be there."

The Pyramid wasn't some magical club. It was just people. Her iphone buzzed again. Maybe she didn't have to choose between staying invisible and playing their game. Maybe she could build something new—starting with being the person who brought an orange cat to a senior party.
