The Orange Bull's Secret

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's farm, especially the old orange tree in the backyard. Its leaves shimmered like gold in the sunlight, and grandmother said the tree was magic.

One warm afternoon, Lily sat beneath the tree eating an orange when she heard splashing from the nearby pond. Peeking through the tall palm fronds, she gasped. There, swimming happily in the cool water, was Barnaby—the grumpy bull who never let anyone pet him!

"Barnaby?" Lily whispered. The bull looked up, water droplets glistening on his nose. To her surprise, he didn't snort or charge away. Instead, he motioned with his head for her to come closer.

"I'm only swimming," the bull said softly. Lily's eyes went wide—Barnaby could talk!

"But everyone says you're grumpy," she said.

"I'm not grumpy," Barnaby sighed, paddling gracefully. "I'm just shy. And scared I'll look silly. A bull who loves swimming isn't very bull-like, is it?"

Lily thought about how she'd never learned to swim because she was afraid others would laugh. "Being different isn't silly," she said. "It's special. Like how I eat spinach sandwiches and nobody understands—but they're delicious!"

Barnaby chuckled. "Spinach sandwiches? That does sound special."

"Teach me to swim?" Lily asked. "And I'll teach you to make spinach sandwiches."

"Deal!" Barnaby said.

Every day that summer, Lily and Barnaby swam together in the pond. The other farm animals finally understood why the grumpy bull seemed so tired in the mornings—he'd been up swimming before sunrise!

"True friends," grandmother said later, "love you exactly as you are, even if you're a bull who swims or a girl who loves spinach."

Lily smiled, biting into an orange from the magic tree. She knew the real magic wasn't in the tree at all. It was in being brave enough to be yourself—and finding friends who love you for it.
