The Orange Bear's Secret

Lily had always wondered what lay beyond the old willow tree at the edge of her grandmother's garden. One hot summer afternoon, she followed a trail of butterflies until she discovered something magical—a hidden pond where the water sparkled like diamonds.

She couldn't resist. Lily kicked off her sandals and slipped into the cool water, swimming lazily among the lily pads. That's when she saw it.

A bear.

But not just any bear. This bear was the color of a bright autumn pumpkin! Its fur shimmered with orange light, and its eyes twinkled like golden honey.

Lily nearly swam to the bank, frightened. But the orange bear didn't roar. It just sat on the grass, holding something round in its paws.

"Are you going to eat me?" Lily called out, her voice trembling.

The bear shook its head and held out what it was holding—an orange!

"I'm Clementine," the bear said softly. "And this is my favorite snack. Would you like one?"

Lily blinked. A talking orange bear who loved oranges? She slowly swam to shore and accepted the fruit. It was the sweetest orange she had ever tasted.

"Why are you orange?" Lily asked between bites.

Clementine smiled. "Long ago, I helped a magical fairy who was trapped in this very pond. She granted me a wish—to always be surrounded by what I love most. Oranges!" The bear laughed, a warm rumbling sound. "But sometimes being different is lonely. Other bears think I'm strange."

Lily thought about her own school, where she felt different because she loved reading while everyone else loved video games.

"I'll be your friend," Lily said. "Being different means you're special."

Clementine's eyes shone. "Would you like to see my secret orchard?"

The bear led Lily through a hidden path to a grove filled with magical orange trees that glowed softly in the twilight. They spent the rest of the summer swimming in the pond and eating oranges under the stars.

When school started, Lily wasn't afraid of being different anymore. She knew that the best friends—like orange bears who love oranges—make life more colorful.

And every summer, Lily returns to swim with Clementine, her magical orange friend who taught her that being different is the most beautiful thing of all.
