The Orange Beanie Conspiracy

Maya pulled her orange beanie down lower over her ears. It was her armor—this goofy, bright-orange hat she'd found at the thrift store that somehow made her invisible when she needed to be.

At least, that's what she told herself.

"You're literally going to burn a hole in the back of Tyler's head with all that staring," Chloe whispered, bumping Maya's shoulder with a grin. They were sitting on the bleachers during lunch, doing what Maya pretended was just casual people-watching but what Chloe knew was definitely low-key stalking.

"I am not stalking," Maya protested, though her eyes flicked back to the soccer field where Tyler laughed with his friends, sunlight catching his dark curls. "I'm conducting research. For science."

"Uh-huh. Is the research called 'how to become a creep 101'?" Chloe rolled her eyes but softened it with a nudge. "Just talk to him already. He's not gonna bite."

Maya sank deeper into her oversized hoodie. Easy for Chloe to say—she'd been talking to her crush Jordan for weeks now, all effortless confidence and perfect hair. Maya felt like a spy in her own life, watching everything happen from behind glass, too scared to step through.

The orange beanie had become her thing this year. Her signature. The girl with the orange hat—people knew her as that, even if they didn't actually KNOW her. It was easier than being herself, whoever that was supposed to be.

Then Tyler turned.

His eyes locked on hers across the field and Maya forgot to breathe. He smiled—not at his friends, but AT her—and raised a hand in a wave. Before she could overthink it into oblivion, her hand somehow lifted in return.

"OH MY GOD," Chloe hissed, grabbing Maya's arm. "He's walking over here. This is not a drill. Repeat: not a drill."

Panic spiked through Maya's chest. What was she supposed to say? Her mind went completely blank, like someone had wiped her hard drive.

Tyler reached the bottom of the bleachers, looking up with that easy smile. "Hey."

"Hey," Maya managed, and it came out steadier than she felt.

"I like your hat," he said. "It's impossible to miss you in that thing."

She laughed, surprising herself. "That's kinda the point."

"Well, it works." He stepped up one bleacher, then another. "I'm Tyler, by the way. Even though you've totally been at my last three games."

Heat flooded her face. He'd NOTICED?

"Maya," she said, pulling her beanie up just a little. "And I wasn't—I mean—"

"I'm glad you were." His smile turned softer. "You wanna come sit closer next time? The view's better from the actual seats."

"Yeah," Maya said, heart hammering against her ribs. "Yeah, I'd like that."

As he walked back to his team, Maya exhaled a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. The orange beanie didn't feel like armor anymore. Maybe it was just a hat, and maybe she didn't have to hide behind it.

"Okay," Chloe breathed, eyes wide. "We are ABSOLUTELY talking about this later."

Maya smiled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Yeah. Yeah, we are."
