The Orange Baseball Magic
On the hottest day of summer, ten-year-old Leo knelt by the edge of the swimming pool, dangling his fingers in the cool blue water. He'd just finished baseball practice, and his favorite orange sat beside him on the concrete, glowing in the sunlight like a tiny sunset.
'Watch this!' yelled his best friend Maya, sprinting across the pool deck. She held her baseball glove high, ready to catch whatever Leo might throw. But as Leo reached for the baseball, his elbow bumped the orange. Splash! The orange sank straight to the bottom of the pool.
'My snack!' Leo cried. Without thinking, he plunged into the water, swimming downward with eyes wide open. But what he saw made him forget all about being hungry.
The orange hadn't sunk at all. It was floating just above the pool floor, glowing brighter than a starfish. And around it, tiny water sprites were playing baseball! They hit a miniature ball with seashell bats, sliding across the pool floor like it was the most magical baseball field in the world.
Maya splashed in beside him, and together they watched in wonder. The sprites waved tiny webbed hands, inviting them to play. Leo grabbed the floating orange, but instead of a snack, it transformed into a shimmering baseball.
'Catch!' a sprite bubbled.
Leo threw the orange baseball. It sailed through the water as if flying through air, leaving trails of rainbow bubbles. Maya caught it with her bare hands, laughing as her hair floated upward like sea grass. They played for hours, swimming and diving, the orange baseball always returning to them like a magical boomerang.
When it was finally time to leave, the sprites waved goodbye and the orange baseball transformed back — a perfect, juicy snack waiting to be shared.
Sitting poolside, Leo peeled the orange. 'Best baseball game ever,' he said, handing Maya a segment.
'Magic happens when you least expect it,' Maya replied, smiling as juice dripped down her chin. 'And friendship makes everything more fun.'
