The Orange Baseball Magic
Lily's wild orange hair bounced as she ran across the grass. Her pigtails, the color of sunset, streamed behind her like two happy flags. She loved baseball more than anything!
One afternoon, Lily found something amazing. An orange baseball glowed softly near the old oak tree. It wasn't like any baseball she'd ever seen—the ball shimmered with tiny sparkles!
"That's strange," whispered Toby, her best friend. His eyes went wide. "The kids at school say a zombie lives in this tree. They say he comes out at night!"
Lily laughed. "There's no such thing as real zombies, Toby! But this baseball is definitely magical."
She picked up the glowing ball. Suddenly, leaves rustled above them. A figure peeked down—not a scary zombie at all! It was Mr. Higgins, the elderly neighbor everyone called a zombie because he walked slowly and never spoke.
"You dropped this," Mr. Higgins said softly, pointing to a regular orange baseball. "I was trying to return it."
Lily gasped. The magical ball in her hand transformed into his regular ball! The magic had been her imagination all along.
"Would you like to play catch?" Lily asked kindly.
Mr. Higgins smiled—the biggest smile anyone had ever seen. For the first time, the children noticed how bright his eyes were, how gentle his hands looked when he caught the ball.
They played until sunset, Lily's orange hair catching the last golden rays. As they walked home, Toby whispered, "He wasn't a zombie. He was just lonely."
Lily nodded. "Sometimes the scariest stories are just about people who need friends."
From that day on, Mr. Higgins joined every baseball game. And the children learned that magic isn't about sparkly balls—it's about kindness and seeing the truth behind scary stories.
