The Orange Baseball Friend

Lily loved her crazy red hair. It bounced when she ran and danced in the wind. But today, her hair drooped like a wilted flower. She had lost something precious.

Her baseball! The magical one her grandfather gave her.

"I'll never find it," Lily whispered, sitting on her front porch. Her chin rested in her hands.

Suddenly, something glowing rolled across the sidewalk. It wasn't a ball. It was an orange — but not just any orange. This one had tiny feet and a big smile!

"Hello there!" the orange said. "I'm Oliver. You look like you need a friend."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"

"Of course!" Oliver did a little spin. "Talking oranges are the best kind of friends. Now, what's making your hair so droopy?"

Lily explained about her lost baseball. It was special because whenever she held it, she remembered playing catch with her grandfather before he moved far away.

Oliver's smile got even bigger. "I can help! But you have to promise something."

"Anything!"

"You have to be brave, and you have to believe in magic." Oliver started glowing brighter. "Hold onto my hand — well, my peel!"

Lily touched the orange's fuzzy skin. WHOOSH! They were suddenly flying over the neighborhood, swooping like birds.

"There!" Oliver pointed.

In a tree at the park, a squirrel was tossing Lily's baseball from branch to branch, playing a game of catch all by itself.

The next morning, Lily found her baseball right beside her bed. And beside it sat a fresh orange with a tiny smile drawn on it.

Her hair bounced again as she ran outside to play, feeling brave and magical. She had learned something wonderful: sometimes, the best friends appear when you need them most. And sometimes, they're even orange.
