The Orange Baseball and the Friendly Sphinx

Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, she'd practice pitching in her backyard until the sun went down. One afternoon, she threw her favorite orange baseball so high that it disappeared into the clouds.

"Wait!" Lily cried, chasing after it. But instead of landing in the grass, the ball kept bouncing—higher and higher—until it settled on top of a magnificent pyramid that had suddenly appeared in her neighborhood.

Lily gasped. The pyramid was made of golden crystal that sparkled in the sunlight. At its base sat a beautiful sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like a rainbow.

"Welcome, young champion," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle bells. "Your magical baseball has led you to the Pyramid of Dreams."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx smiled. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to climb the pyramid and play the most important game ever."

"What game?"

"The Game of Courage." The sphinx's emerald eyes twinkled. "You must climb to the top, but each step shows you something scary. Only those who keep going reach the prize."

Lily's heart beat fast. She wasn't sure she was brave enough. But she thought about how much she wanted her orange baseball back.

"Okay," she said, taking a deep breath.

The first step showed a dark forest with spooky shadows. Lily stepped forward anyway. The second step showed a big thunderstorm. Lily kept climbing. The third step showed a mountain of homework that never ended!

Lily laughed. "That's not so scary!" She climbed higher and higher until she reached the top.

There, floating in a magical pool of sparkling water, was her orange baseball. But something amazing happened—the sphinx flew up and joined her.

"You did it!" the sphinx cheered. "Now for the best part—swimming in the Pool of Wishes!"

Together they splashed and played, and Lily made her wish: "I wish for courage whenever I need it."

The sphinx nodded. "You already have it, Lily. You found it yourself."

As the pyramid faded away like morning mist, Lily landed back in her yard, orange baseball in hand. But something was different now—she felt braver than ever before.

From that day on, whenever Lily faced something scary, she remembered climbing the pyramid. And she knew that courage wasn't about not being afraid—it was about being afraid and doing it anyway.
