The Orange and the Sphinx

Lily loved walking by the sparkling water that flowed behind her house. Every afternoon, she'd skip stones and watch the ripples dance across the surface. But one magical Tuesday, everything changed.

She found something peculiar floating in the water — a bright orange that glowed like sunshine. Lily reached in and pulled it out. The orange felt warm in her hands, as if it held a secret.

Curious, she peeled it open. Instead of fruit, a tiny creature popped out! It had the body of a lion, the head of a person, and wings like a butterfly.

"I am a sphinx," said the tiny creature, stretching its wings. "And I've been waiting for someone kind enough to find my orange home."

Lily's eyes widened. "A real sphinx? But you're so small!"

The sphinx laughed — a sound like wind chimes. "The magic of friendship makes me just the right size. Would you like to be my friend?"

"Yes!" Lily clapped her hands.

Every day after school, Lily visited the water's edge. The sphinx, whose name was Sunny, taught her riddles and stories about ancient times. In return, Lily shared her snacks and dreams.

One afternoon, Sunny looked sad. "My magic orange is fading. Soon I'll be too small to see."

Lily's heart sank. She didn't want to lose her new friend.

"True friendship isn't about size," Sunny said wisely. "It's about what's in here." The sphinx touched Lily's chest, right over her heart.

Lily understood. Even if Sunny became invisible, their friendship would remain real.

As the orange's glow faded, Sunny whispered one last riddle: "What grows bigger when you give it away?"

"A friend!" Lily answered with a smile.

And though she could no longer see Sunny, Lily always felt a warm, orange glow in her heart whenever she visited the water. She had learned that the best friends are the ones who stay with you, even when you can't see them.
