The Oracle of Venice Beach
The sun was setting over Venice Beach when Elena found him鈥擜ncient Ram贸n, they called him鈥攕itting cross-legged on a frayed blanket, his weathered face a map of seventy years. She'd been wandering for hours after leaving Mark, her iphone burning in her pocket with twelve unread messages she couldn't bring herself to answer. The breakup texts had been cowardly, delivered while she slept, but Ram贸n's presence felt like an antidote to all that digital noise.
A black cat with one yellow eye and one blue wound around his legs, purring like a small engine. Ram贸n caught her staring and smiled, revealing teeth that had seen better days. 'Sphinx brings those who need answers,' he said, gesturing to the cat. 'Sit. Let me see your palm.'
Elena hesitated. She was thirty-two, a data analyst who trusted spreadsheets, not mysticism. But something about his gentleness drew her in. She extended her hand. Ram贸n traced the lines with fingers rough as tree bark, pausing at her life line where it forked unexpectedly.
'Two paths,' he murmured. 'The bull鈥攜ou charge through obstacles. Strong, determined.' His finger moved to her heart line, which broke and mended. 'But here, this break. Someone who promised forever, didn't they?'
Tears pricked her eyes. Mark had proposed in Paris, under a spring cherry tree. Six months later, he'd cited 'irreconcilable visions' as he packed his boxes.
'He said I was too much,' Elena whispered. 'Too intense, too demanding.'
Ram贸n shook his head slowly. 'Not too much. Simply water seeking its own level.' He pressed something into her palm鈥攁 smooth river stone. 'The heart heals like bone, stronger where it knits. But first, you must feel the break.'
Her phone buzzed again. This time, Elena didn't check it. She sat with Ram贸n as the Pacific darkened, Sphinx curled in her lap, while somewhere inland, Mark was probably already rewriting their history. Let him. She was busy learning how to begin.
