The Oracle of Malibu

The cable guy was late, which felt like metaphor. Elena sat on her balcony, **palm** fronds scraping against the stucco like nervous fingers, and watched the Pacific gray-out through morning fog. At 42, she'd expected to feel more settled. Instead, she felt like a riddle without an answer.

"Sorry about the wait," he said, appearing at her sliding glass door. Young, with hair that fell in his eyes — thick, dark **hair** that made her conscious of the silver threads gathering at her temples. He carried coils of fiber optic **cable** like a modern-day cowboy with lassos.

They worked in silence as he replaced her outdated system. Elena's **iPhone** buzzed relentlessly on the kitchen counter — emails from the startup where she was VP of Operations, a company that promised to "disrupt human connection" while she hadn't had a real conversation in months.

"You know," the cable guy said suddenly, "my grandmother used to read palms. Said the life line cuts short when you stop listening to yourself."

Elena looked at her own **palm** — the lines there, the stories she'd stopped telling herself. Outside, a **sphinx** moth tapped against the glass, drawn to the light she'd left burning all night. It had been so long since she'd slept properly.

"What did she say about yours?" Elena asked, surprising herself.

He smiled, showing the gap between his front teeth. "She said I'd meet someone who needed to remember what they'd lost."

The moth finally found its way to open air. Elena's phone buzzed again, urgent and demanding. For the first time in three years, she let it ring.

"I used to be a photographer," she said. "Before the disruption. Before the optimization."

The cable guy nodded, connected the last line, tested the signal. "Your grandmother's riddle," she said. "What's the answer?"

"There isn't one," he said, packing up his tools. "That's why it's a **sphinx**. The question is the point."

After he left, Elena sat on her balcony until the fog burned off, watching the **palm** trees sway against a blue sky. She took her **iPhone** and turned it off. Then she went inside, found her old camera in the back of the closet, and began to remember.
