The Ones We Leave Behind

The hat still hung on the coat rack by my desk—Marcus's vintage fedora, collecting dust like an abandoned promise. Three weeks since he'd walked out of this office, three weeks since he'd told me he couldn't do this anymore, and I was still untangling the mess he'd left behind.

I stared at the cable spaghetti beneath my desk, a knotted disaster that mirrored everything I couldn't sort through in my head. My cat, Buster, had decided the computer cables were his personal jungle gym last night, and now I was seated on the floor at 7 AM, fingers working through the chaos while my coffee went cold on my desk.

Marcus had been more than a friend. We'd built this department together, survived three rounds of layoffs, two mergers, and that catastrophic product launch in 2022 that had us both sleeping under our desks for a week. He'd been the one who found me crying in the server room after Sarah left, the one who poured whiskey into paper coffee cups and told me that heartbreak was just ambition's collateral damage.

Now he was gone, and his departure email had been three sentences long.

Buster had curled up on my desk chair, purring like he understood everything and nothing. The cat had better emotional intelligence than half the leadership team.

My phone buzzed. Marcus's name flashed on the screen. My thumb hovered over the answer button, heart hammering against ribs that felt suddenly too fragile. The cable in my hand went taut, then slack—like the breath I'd been holding since he left.

"I forgot my hat," he said, and the simple truth of it cracked something open inside me. He hadn't left the hat behind. He'd left a piece of himself, a reason to return.

"Come get it," I said, and the words felt like beginning again.
