The Ocean in My Pocket
Lily loved her old iphone. It didn't make calls anymore — Mom said it was too ancient — but Lily had discovered something magical about it. When she pressed certain buttons in the right order, it glowed with a soft blue light.
One rainy afternoon, Lily sat by the pond behind her house, tapping the glowing screen. Suddenly, ripples spread across the glass. But these weren't ordinary ripples — tiny waves splashed right out of the phone!
"Whoa!" Lily cried, dropping the iphone onto the grass.
The phone floated, then sank into the mud. Lily gasped as a burst of water sprayed upward, and with it came a tiny creature no bigger than her thumb. It had shimmering blue skin and fins that sparkled like diamonds.
"Hello!" the creature squeaked. "I'm Finn! Thank you for freeing me!"
Lily's eyes widened. "You're... a mermaid?"
"A water sprite!" Finn corrected happily. "I was trapped in that phone for one hundred years. A wizard put me there as punishment for playing too many tricks on fishermen."
Lily giggled. "Will you be my friend?"
"I'd love to!" Finn did a little flip in the air. "But I need to return home soon. Water sprites belong in the ocean, not on land."
Lily's heart sank. "You just got here."
Finn touched her hand with a cool, wet finger. "But you can visit anytime! Look what I can do."
Finn blew gently on Lily's old iphone. The screen shimmered and transformed into a window. Through it, Lily could see an underwater kingdom with coral castles and schools of rainbow fish swimming past.
"It's beautiful!" Lily breathed.
"True friendship isn't about being together all the time," Finn said wisely. "It's about always having a way back to each other."
Lily nodded slowly. She understood.
"Now," Finn said, "I need one last thing before I go home. A drop of water from your hand."
Lily cupped her hands and let rainwater pool in her palms. Finn dipped one finger into the water, then — POP! — he vanished in a splash of sparkles.
But when Lily looked at her phone, something had changed. A tiny icon appeared: a shell with a smiley face. When she touched it, she could hear the ocean's song.
Lily smiled, pressing the phone to her heart. She had discovered something wonderful: some friends might live far away, in places she couldn't follow, but true friendship always finds a way to stay close.
And sometimes, magic hides in the most unexpected places — even in something as ordinary as an old, broken phone.
