The Not-So-Zombie Cat

Lily loved her grandmother's backyard, especially the towering palm tree that swayed in the ocean breeze. Every summer, she'd collect fallen palm fronds and build fairy houses in the garden's sunniest corner.

But this summer felt different. A strange cat had appeared beneath the palm tree, moving so slowly that Lily's brother Tommy called it a zombie cat. Its fur stuck up in messy patches, and it stumbled like it was sleepwalking.

"Don't touch it," Tommy warned. "Zombie cats might be dangerous."

Lily wasn't so sure. Something about the cat's sleepy green eyes seemed kind, not scary. She left a bowl of tuna near the palm tree and watched from the window.

At midnight, Lily crept outside. The zombie cat wasn't slow anymore! It darted around the palm tree, chasing magical fireflies that glowed like tiny stars. When the cat spotted Lily, it didn't run. Instead, it nudged something toward her—a baby firefly!

The cat wasn't a zombie at all. It was a guardian, protecting the magical creatures that lived in the grandmother's palm tree. By day, it moved slowly to save energy for its important nighttime work.

Lily named him Midnight, and every evening she'd sit beneath the palm tree, watching him care for the fireflies. Some nights, he even let her help.

"I'm sorry I judged you," Lily whispered one evening. Midnight purred and bumped his head against her hand. His fur was soft, not spooky at all.

Tommy eventually came too, learning that sometimes the strangest things hide the most beautiful magic. And every summer since, Lily and Tommy sit beneath the palm tree, watching their friend Midnight guard his glowing fireflies—proving that even the most misunderstood creatures can become the best friends.
