The Not-So-Spooky Pyramid

Lily loved building things. One sunny afternoon, she stacked her wooden blocks into a tall, perfect pyramid in the backyard. Her pet goldfish, Finny, swam happily in his bowl on the patio table, watching her work.

"I'm an explorer!" Lily announced, marching around her pyramid. "I'll discover ancient treasures!"

Suddenly, something strange happened. From behind the garden shed came a funny green figure. It was a toy zombie that had been forgotten in the grass months ago—but now it was moving!

"Brains?" the zombie said in a silly voice, wobbling on its stiff legs. Then it spotted Lily's pyramid. "Pyramid! Home! Must go home!"

Lily wasn't scared. The zombie looked too clumsy to be frightening. Its arms stuck out straight, and it walked with a funny hop-step motion.

"Are you lost?" Lily asked kindly.

"Home! Pyramid home!" the zombie said happily.

"You can visit my pyramid!" Lily offered. She guided the little zombie to her creation. The zombie's plastic face somehow smiled.

Just then, Lily's little brother Sam came running outside. "Lily! Mom says—" He stopped. "Why is your toy zombie moving?"

"He's friendly!" Lily said. "He just wants to visit the pyramid."

Sam approached slowly. The zombie waved its stiff arm. "Friend?" it asked.

Sam giggled. "He's not scary at all. He's kind of cute!"

The three new friends—Lily, Sam, and the not-so-scary zombie—spent the afternoon playing. The zombie tried to help build more pyramids, though he kept knocking them over by accident. They didn't mind. Finny the goldfish seemed to be watching, blowing happy bubbles.

"Even though something looks different or strange," Lily told Sam, opening her palm to show him a shiny marble she'd found, "it might just need a friend."

When the sun began to set, the zombie grew still again, becoming a regular toy. But Lily and Sam knew better. They tucked him safely in a special box, right next to Finny's bowl.

"We'll play again tomorrow," Lily promised. And somewhere, deep inside the toy zombie, a tiny spark of magic waited for the next adventure.

That night, as Lily drifted to sleep, she understood the best secret of all: sometimes the scariest-looking things just need someone to see them as friends.
