The Not-So-Spooky Pool Party
Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every Saturday, she would dive into the cool blue water of the community pool and pretend she was a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom. She could swim underwater for almost a whole minute, and she knew every corner of that pool like the back of her hand.
One sunny afternoon, Lily was doing her favorite underwater dance when she saw something strange in the deep end. Through the rippling water, she spotted what looked like a zombie! It had pale green skin, wobbly arms, and moved in a jerky, zombie-like way. Lily's heart raced. Zombies didn't belong in swimming pools!
But just as she was about to swim away, the zombie popped up from the water, laughing. It wasn't a real zombie at all — it was a boy named Max wearing an old swimsuit and green face paint for Halloween practice!
"I'm practicing my zombie walk for the school party," Max explained with a grin. "Want to see?" He did a silly wobbly dance that made water splash everywhere.
Lily giggled. "That's the best zombie I've ever seen! But zombies can't swim, can they?" She splashed water at him playfully.
"Challenge accepted!" Max declared. And that's how they became friends. They spent the rest of the afternoon having contests: who could swim the most like a zombie, who could hold their breath the longest, and who could make the biggest splash.
When Lily's mom called her to leave, Max waved goodbye. "Same time next week?"
"Absolutely!" Lily called back, already counting the days until she could go swimming with her new friend again.
As she walked home, Lily learned something important: sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most wonderful surprises, and the best friendships start when you're brave enough to say hello.
