The Not-So-Spooky Pool

Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. One hot afternoon, she followed a trail of glittering blue butterflies until she discovered something amazing—a crystal-clear pool she'd never seen before.

But something green and lumpy was lurking near the water's edge. It dragged one foot, then the other. "A zombie!" Lily gasped, hiding behind an oak tree.

The zombie sighed—a sad, creaky sound like a rusty gate. "I'm not a zombie," it said, noticing Lily's peeking eyes. "I'm Zola. I move slowly because my legs are made of moss and marshmallows."

Lily stepped closer. Zola was green, yes, but her eyes twinkled like stars. She had flowers braided into her hair.

"Welcome to the Sphinx's Swimming Pool," Zola said, pointing to the water.

Suddenly, a magnificent creature rose from the center of the pool. She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman, with golden wings folded gracefully at her sides.

"I am Sphinx," she said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "To swim in these magical waters, you must answer my riddle."

Lily's heart beat fast. "I'm ready!"

"What has a bottom at the top?" Sphinx asked.

Lily thought hard. She looked at Zola, who smiled encouragingly. Then it clicked! "A swimming pool!"

Sphinx beamed. "Correct! You may swim." The water sparkled like diamonds as Lily jumped in. Swimming there felt like flying—every stroke was effortless, every kick weightless. Zola joined her, and they played mermaid games until sunset.

"Come back anytime," Sphinx called as Lily dried off with a towel that appeared from nowhere.

Walking home, Lily realized something important: sometimes the scariest-looking things are actually the kindest, and slow friends are the best friends of all. She couldn't wait for tomorrow's adventure with Zola and Sphinx.
