The Not-So-Spooky Garden Zombie
Leo pulled his red wagon down the sidewalk, his golden retriever Buddy trotting happily beside him. Buddy was the best dog in the whole world – he could catch frisbees in mid-air and always knew when Leo was feeling sad.
"Hey Leo!" called his friend Maya from across the street. "Did you hear? There's a zombie living in the old house on Maple Street!"
Leo's eyes went wide. "A real zombie?"
"That's what my big brother says!" Maya nodded. "He saw green skin through the window!"
That night, Leo couldn't stop thinking about the zombie. What if it was hungry? What if it wanted to eat brains? Buddy nudged Leo's hand with his wet nose, as if saying, 'Don't worry, I'll protect you.'
The next morning, Leo and Buddy marched to the old house. The gate creaked. The windows were dusty. And there, in the garden, was a figure with messy green hair and paint-covered clothes.
Buddy wagged his tail and ran right up to him.
"Buddy, come back!" Leo whispered. But the dog was already getting his ears scratched by the supposed zombie.
"Hello there, little fellow," the man said in a kind voice. He had green paint on his nose, dirt on his overalls, and flowers in his hair. "And who might you be?"
"I'm Leo. Are you... a zombie?"
The man laughed, and his eyes crinkled like warm sunshine. "Well, I suppose I might look like one after spending all day in my garden!" He showed Leo his hands – stained green from painting a garden sign. "I'm Mr. Green. I've been planting vegetables and painting pictures. Sometimes I get so messy, I forget to clean up!"
Leo breathed a huge sigh of relief. "You're not scary at all!"
"Would you like to see my pumpkins?" Mr. Green asked. "I'm growing magical ones – they're almost as big as you!"
Leo spent the whole afternoon helping Mr. Green plant seeds while Buddy chased butterflies. They became the best of friends, and Leo learned that sometimes things that seem scary are actually just wonderful people who love gardens and dogs.
From then on, Leo never judged by appearances again. And every Saturday, he and Buddy visited their friend Mr. Green – the friendliest, most magical zombie in the whole world.
