The Not-So-Spooky Friend

Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house. Every Saturday, she and her golden retriever, Barnaby, would discover new treasures. But today was different. Today, they found something extraordinary.

Behind the old oak tree, deep in the mossy hollow, something stirred. A green creature with messy black hair and patchwork clothes peeked out from behind a mushroom. It looked like something from Lily's storybooks—a zombie! But this zombie was holding a tiny bowl with a sad little goldfish swimming inside.

Barnaby wagged his tail happily and trotted right up to the creature.

"Barnaby, wait!" Lily called, but her dog didn't listen. He licked the zombie's face.

The zombie giggled. "Hello, doggie!" he said, his voice sounding surprisingly normal and friendly. "I'm Zephyr. This is Glimmer." He pointed to the goldfish. "She's my best friend."

Lily stepped closer, her fear melting away. "You... you're a zombie?"

Zephyr nodded sadly. "That's what everyone calls me. They run away before I can explain. I'm not scary. I'm just magically cursed to look this way. I love flowers, and I love Glimmer, and I've been so lonely."

Glimmer the goldfish swam to the surface of her bowl and made a happy bubble sound. She seemed to be smiling.

Lily's heart swelled with understanding. "I'm Lily, and this is Barnaby. We don't care how you look. We care about who you are inside."

That afternoon, the three of them—well, four counting Glimmer—played among the flowers. Zephyr showed them secret paths through the forest. Barnaby let Zephyr pet his soft golden hair. Glimmer swam in her bowl, making everyone laugh with her silly bubble songs.

As the sun began to set, Zephyr's eyes grew wide. "The magic spell! It says true friendship can break it!"

A warm glow surrounded Zephyr. His green skin faded to a healthy pink. His patchwork clothes transformed into a handsome tunic. The zombie curse had been broken by friendship!

"Thank you, Lily and Barnaby," Zephyr said, tears of joy in his eyes. "You saw me, not what I looked like. That's the greatest magic of all."

From that day on, Zephyr visited Lily and Barnaby every weekend. Glimmer got a beautiful pond to swim in. And whenever someone new came to the forest, looking scared, Zephyr would smile and remember: true friends see with their hearts, not their eyes.
