The Not-So-Spicy Zombie Friend

Lily loved her new orange iPhone case. It was bright like sunshine and felt happy in her hand. Every day after school, she would go running through Golden Oak Park, her sneakers crunching on fallen leaves.

One afternoon, something made her stop. Behind the big willow tree, she saw someone moving very slowly. Their arms were stretched out stiffly, and they walked with a funny shuffle. Lily remembered the zombie game her big brother played on his phone.

"Is that... a zombie?" she whispered.

The figure turned around slowly. It wasn't a zombie at all! It was Mr. Abernathy, the old librarian, wearing a green face mask because he'd been gardening. He looked confused.

"I'm not a zombie," he chuckled, pulling down his mask. "I'm just looking for my favorite reading spot. These old knees don't move as fast as they used to."

Lily giggled. "I can help you find the perfect spot!"

She led Mr. Abernathy to a cozy bench under the flowering dogwood tree. Then she had an idea. She pulled out her iPhone and opened her favorite storytelling app.

"Would you like me to read to you?" she asked.

Mr. Abernathy's eyes twinkled. "I would love that."

Every day after that, Lily went running to meet Mr. Abernathy at their special bench. She read stories about dragons and space adventures, and he shared tales from when he was a little boy. They became the best of friends.

One day, Lily brought Mr. Abernathy a gift—a bright orange from her grandmother's tree.

"For you," she said with a smile.

Mr. Abernathan peeled it slowly, the sweet citrus smell filling the air. "You know," he said, "sometimes things aren't what they seem. What looks scary might just be someone who needs a friend."

Lily nodded, understanding the most important lesson of all. Kindness can turn any scary zombie into a wonderful friend, especially when you share stories and oranges together under the trees.
