The Not-So-Spicy Zombie
Lily loved exploring the attic on rainy afternoons. That's where she found the dusty old hat with silver stars around the brim. When she put it on, something magical happened – the attic wall shimmered like a soap bubble, and suddenly she wasn't in her house anymore.
She stood in a sunny courtyard where a zombie was hitting a ball against a wall with a padel racket. But this wasn't a scary zombie like in movies. He wore bright pink sneakers and a neon green shirt, and when he saw Lily, he waved enthusiastically.
"Hi! I'm Zed!" he called out. "Want to play?"
Lily stepped forward cautiously. "You're... you're a zombie. Aren't zombies supposed to be scary?"
Zed laughed, spinning the padel racket on his finger. "That's just what people say because they don't know us. Real zombies just love outdoor games and making friends. We're not spicy at all – we're actually quite mild!"
Lily giggled. "I'm Lily. And I'd love to learn how to play."
For the next hour, Zed taught her how to hit the ball, run across the court, and laugh when she missed. Lily had never met anyone so patient and kind.
"There's somewhere I want to show you," Zed said when they stopped for water. "The Great Pyramid of Play!"
He led her through a golden doorway where an enormous pyramid made of crystal blocks rose toward the sky. Each block held a different game inside – some with flying children, others with dancing animals, all playing together.
"This is where children from every world come to play," Zed explained softly. "I've been waiting for a friend to share it with."
Lily understood then that the magical hat had brought her exactly where she needed to be. "I'll be your friend, Zed. Always."
The pyramid sparkled brighter than ever, and Zed smiled so widely his green face practically glowed.
"Sometimes," Lily said, taking Zed's hand, "the best adventures are the ones where you learn that things aren't what they seem. And friends can be found in the most surprising places."
When Lily's mom called her for dinner, the hat slipped from her head. The attic was just an attic again, but in her pocket, Lily found a small crystal pyramid block that still shimmered with magic. She knew she'd found something better than treasure – a friend who taught her that everyone deserves a chance to show their true colors, even zombies.
