The Not-So-Scary Zombie Pool Game

Lily and her best friend Toby loved summer days. They especially loved playing baseball in the park behind Lily's house. But today was extra hot — the kind of hot where even the grass seemed thirsty for water.

"Home run!" Toby shouted as he whacked the baseball with his plastic bat. The ball sailed higher and higher, over the fence, and splash! Right into Mrs. Green's swimming pool.

"Oh no," Lily whispered. "Nobody has seen Mrs. Green in weeks. My sister says she's a zombie."

Toby's eyes went wide. "A zombie? Like in the movies?"

Lily nodded, trying to look brave. "I heard her walking around at night. Groaning. Slowly. Just like a zombie."

They tiptoed to the fence and peeked through the cracks. There, floating in the pool on a bright pink flamingo floatie, was Mrs. Green herself. She was wearing a big sun hat and sunglasses, and she was... snoring.

"She's not a zombie!" Toby giggled. "She's napping!"

Just then, Mrs. Green's eyes opened. She spotted them and smiled. "Hello there! Would you like your baseball back?"

She reached into the water and pulled out the soggy ball. Then she did something surprising — she stood up on her floatie and tossed it back over the fence with perfect aim.

"I used to play baseball when I was your age," she called out. "I was the pitcher for my school team!"

Lily and Toby looked at each other in wonder.

"Can you teach us?" Lily asked.

Mrs. Green laughed. "How about every Saturday this summer? I could use some practice, and my pool could use some company."

And that's how they learned that things aren't always what they seem. The "zombie" turned out to be the best baseball coach ever, and every Saturday, they played their favorite game while cooling their feet in her pool.

Sometimes the scariest stories are just wonderful friendships waiting to happen.
