The Not-So-Scary Zombie Friend
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. Every afternoon, she'd grab her padel racquet and her loyal dog Barnaby would bounding beside her, tail wagging like crazy.
One cloudy afternoon, they heard the strangest sound. Rattle, shuffle, groan. Barnaby's fur stood up straight.
A figure emerged from behind the old oak tree. It had messy green hair sticking up everywhere, clothes that looked tattered and torn, and it moved slowly, arms stretched out.
"A zombie!" Lily gasped, grabbing Barnaby's collar.
But then a giant brown bear stepped out beside the zombie. Lily's heart pounded. What kind of creature had a bear for a friend?
"Wait! Please don't run!" the zombie called out. Its voice sounded kind, not scary at all.
Lily stayed frozen.
"I'm Zara," the zombie said. "And this is Teddy. We're not scary. We're just... different."
Zara explained that she was actually a magical forest spirit. The green hair wasn't gross — it was made of moss! The tattered clothes were leaves and vines woven together.
"But why do you look like a zombie?" Lily asked, stepping closer.
Zara smiled. "Because people expect zombies to be scary, so they stay away. But really, I just want to play."
She pointed at Lily's padel racquet. "I love games!"
Lily's eyes widened. "You want to play padel?"
"More than anything!"
And that's how they spent the afternoon — Lily, Barnaby, Teddy the bear, and Zara the zombie-spirit, playing padel against an old tree trunk. Zara was terrible at it, but she laughed so hard that moss fell from her hair and made Teddy sneeze.
"Appearances can be deceiving," Zara said as the sun began to set. "Sometimes the scariest things are just lonely friends waiting for someone to give them a chance."
Lily hugged Zara goodbye. Every day after school, she returned to play with her unusual new friends. She learned that bravery isn't about facing scary things — it's about being open to seeing the good in everyone, even zombies with mossy green hair and bear best friends.
