The Not-So-Scary Zombie

Lily peeked through her bedroom window, her heart pounding. Something strange was moving in the backyard! Whatever it was, it shuffled and stumbled like the monsters from her big brother's video games.

"A zombie!" she whispered, her brown hair falling over her eyes.

She grabbed her mom's iPhone from the nightstand and tiptoed downstairs. The screen lit up the dark hallway as she crept to the back door. With shaking hands, she pushed it open.

"Hello?" she called out softly.

The zombie turned around.

"Bark!"

Lily gasped. It wasn't a zombie at all—it was her dog, Max! But Max looked terrible. His golden fur was matted and tangled with something thick and black. He wobbled when he walked, and his usual happy tail wag was more of a slow droop.

"Oh no, Max! What happened to you?" Lily rushed to her best friend. Max licked her hand, but he looked sad and tired.

Lily shined the iPhone flashlight and discovered the problem: Max was tangled in an old TV cable from the garage! It must have fallen from the trash pile. She knelt beside him and carefully unwound the thick black wire from his fur, talking to him softly the whole time.

"You're the bravest dog ever," she said, scratching behind his ears. "Even if you did look like a silly zombie for a minute."

Once free, Max shook himself and barked joyfully. His tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled.

Lily hugged him tight. She learned something important that night: sometimes scary things turn out to be just our friends needing help. And that, she thought as Max curled up beside her, was the best kind of adventure—one where you get to save someone you love.

She typed a quick note on her mom's iPhone: "Best backyard adventure ever. My zombie is actually my superhero dog."
