The Not-So-Scary Garden Friend
Leo loved exploring behind his grandmother's house, especially the old garden where vegetables grew taller than his head. One afternoon, something strange caught his eye—a figure shuffling between the corn stalks, moving slowly and stiffly.
Leo's heart raced. The neighbor kids had warned him about the garden zombie, a green creature who supposedly waited for curious children. But Leo was braver than most. He crept closer, hiding behind a giant pumpkin.
The figure stopped and leaned against a fence post. It wasn't scary at all—it was just Mr. Abernathy, the old farmer who lived next door! He was moving slowly because his back hurt, and his green shirt had faded from years of sun. He wasn't a zombie at all. He was just lonely.
"Hello there," Mr. Abernathy called, spotting Leo's sneakers. "You're not afraid of an old man, are you?"
Leo stepped out, smiling. "I thought you were a garden zombie!"
Mr. Abernathy laughed, a warm sound like crackling leaves. "That's what children say. But I could use a friend to help me feed the animals. Would you like to meet my bull?"
Leo nodded eagerly. Together they walked to the pasture where Ferdinand, the gentlest bull in the county, waited. His coat was the color of chocolate, and his eyes were soft and kind. Mr. Abernathy showed Leo how to scratch behind Ferdinand's ears, and the bull leaned into Leo's hand with a happy rumble.
"Ferdinand may look scary to some," Mr. Abernathy said, "but big creatures often have the biggest hearts. Like me—people thought I was scary because I moved slowly and stayed in my garden. But really, I was just waiting for someone brave enough to say hello."
Leo visited Mr. Abernathy every day after that. He learned that things aren't always what they seem, and that sometimes the scariest-looking situations hide the best friendships. The zombie that wasn't a zombie became Leo's best friend, and together they made sure Ferdinand the bull never felt lonely again.
And whenever other children whispered about the garden zombie, Leo just smiled. Some secrets are too wonderful to spoil—especially magical friendships that bloom where you least expect them.
