The Not-So-Scary Garden Friend
Leo loved his grandmother's garden, especially in autumn when the leaves turned brilliant shades of gold and crimson. One afternoon, he was chasing the wind—running through rows of pumpkins—when he spotted something peculiar moving behind the old oak tree.
To his surprise, a small figure stumbled out. It looked like a tiny zombie, with patchy clothes and messy green hair, but instead of groaning, it sneezed. "Achoo!"
"You're not scary at all," Leo laughed. The creature smiled shyly.
"I'm Zimby," it said. "I'm looking for my friend. Have you seen a big, gentle bull? He has an orange ribbon around his neck."
Leo's eyes widened. "Barnaby! He lives in the meadow nearby. But why would a bull be your friend?"
Zimby explained that he wasn't really a zombie—he was a garden sprite who helped plants grow. Barnaby had helped him reach the tall sunflowers all summer, and they'd become best friends. Today was Zimby's birthday, and Barnaby had promised to show him something special.
Together, Leo and Zimby ran toward the meadow, Leo's sneakers crunching on fallen orange leaves. When they found Barnaby, the massive bull was resting peacefully, an orange ribbon indeed around his neck.
"Happy birthday!" Barnaby said, surprising Leo with his deep, kind voice. He pointed with his nose toward the sunset sky.
Leo gasped. The whole horizon was painted in brilliant orange and pink—a perfect birthday gift for someone who loved gardens and sunsets.
"Thank you for helping me find my friend," Zimby said, hugging Leo's leg. "Sometimes the scariest-looking things turn out to be the kindest."
Leo waved goodbye as the sun dipped below the trees. He learned that day that friends come in all shapes and sizes, and that running toward adventure might lead to the most wonderful surprises.
