The Not-So-Scary Garden Friend

Lily and Max loved playing padel in the sunny park. The racquet made a satisfying *thwack* every time they hit the ball across the net. But today, something strange caught their eye near the old community garden.

A green figure shuffled between the rows of vegetables. It moved slowly, its arms stretched out like it was searching for something.

"Is that a... zombie?" Lily whispered, her eyes wide.

Max grabbed his racquet tighter. "Maybe we should—"

But before they could run, the figure turned around. It wasn't a zombie at all! It was Mr. Green, the elderly gardener, covered head to toe in green paint and wearing ragged clothes.

"Boo!" he called out, laughing. "Did I scare you?"

Lily and Max looked at each other and giggled. "You really did!"

Mr. Green wiped sweat from his forehead. "I'm rehearsing for the neighborhood Halloween party. Want to help me harvest some spinach before the party? I'm making my famous spinach dip."

The children nodded eagerly. They spent the afternoon learning how to pick the perfect leaves, their hands turning green too. Mr. Green told them stories about the garden, about how vegetables grow from tiny seeds into something wonderful.

"You know," he said, "things aren't always what they seem. Sometimes what looks scary is just someone who needs a friend."

That evening at the party, Mr. Green won the prize for best costume. And when he served his spinach dip, Lily and Max beamed with pride.

They had learned something important that day: never judge someone by how they look. Even zombie-looking gardeners could become the best of friends.

And every time they played padel after that, they would wave to Mr. Green, who would wave back with his green-painted hands, his smile brighter than any Halloween costume.
