The Night We Stopped Pretending

The spinach lay wilted on Emma's plate, a testament to how badly this dinner had gone. She swirled her wine, studying Marcus across the table. He'd checked his iPhone six times in twenty minutes.

'You expecting something?' she asked, not really wanting to know.

Marcus looked up, guilty. 'Work. You know how it gets.'

Emma didn't know anymore. Three months ago, she'd trusted him completely. Now everything felt staged, like she was performing in a relationship she'd already left emotionally.

A fox appeared at the edge of the patio — mangy, ribs showing, watching them through the glass door. Emma felt an odd kinship. Something hungry and desperate, eating scraps.

'I ran into Sarah today,' she said. 'She asked about us.'

'Sarah?' Marcus frowned. 'I haven't talked to her in months.'

Emma set down her glass. 'She told me you hired her firm to run background checks on me last spring. Before we even moved in together.'

The silence stretched, thick and suffocating. Outside, the fox vanished into darkness.

'Emma, it's not what you think—'

'You're not a spy, Marcus. You're just a coward who couldn't ask me directly about my past.' She stood up. 'The spinach was overcooked anyway.'

Later, she'd learn about the encrypted files on his phone, the surveillance, the way he'd monitored her movements for six months. But in that moment, watching his face crumble, she understood something worse: he'd destroyed their friendship trying to protect himself from imagined ghosts.

Some things, once broken, can't be fixed with explanations. She left him sitting with the cold dinner, the fox watching from the shadows, and wondered why it had taken her so long to stop pretending this was enough.
