The Night We Became Legends

Maya was thirty minutes into accidentally stalking Jake's Instagram when she died. Okay, not literally died—she just wished the earth would open up and swallow her whole. Jake, the sophomore with the perfect smile and mysterious vibe, was sitting two tables away at Panera while she was supposed to be studying for history. Instead, she'd been in full **spy** mode, creeping through his posts from 2019 (before he got cool) when his phone dinged. The same exact sound her phone had made when she accidentally liked his post from three years ago.

"You're being creepy," whispered Sam, her best friend since third grade. Sam was already halfway through the breadbasket and judging Maya's life choices.

"I am NOT," Maya hissed back. "I'm conducting research. For educational purposes."

"Right. Because knowing Jake's dog's name is somehow gonna help you pass history."

Maya glared. His **dog** was named Barnaby, thank you very much, and this was IMPORTANT information. Unlike history, which she was definitely failing after staying up until 3 AM watching Netflix instead of studying. She was walking around like a total **zombie** all week, surviving on caffeine and sheer panic.

The bell rang, signaling the start of their school's annual Escape Room Challenge night. Maya's stomach did that thing it always did when she had to do anything social—cramped, twisted, and threatened to empty itself right there on the cafeteria floor.

They'd been assigned to Group 7 with Jake (JAKE), two juniors who looked like they ran track, and a sophomore named Chloe who wore a jacket covered in anime pins. The social **pyramid** was real and Maya was somewhere in the basement.

"Your team's challenge," announced Mr. Harrison, "is The Riddle of the Sphinx. You have forty minutes to solve it or face eternal shame."

Eternal shame. Great. Maya's specialty.

The escape room was darker than she expected, with fake torches casting weird shadows on walls painted to look like ancient Egypt. In the center stood a papier-mâché **sphinx** with glowing red eyes and way too much detail.

"Okay," Jake said, and Maya's brain short-circuited because he was TALKING, TO THEM, IN THEIR GROUP. "We need to split up. I'll take the wall with the hieroglyphics. Chloe, can you handle the statues?"

Chloe nodded like this was exactly what she'd been training for her entire life.

"Maya, Sam—you guys good with the riddle scroll?"

Maya couldn't speak. Was this happening? Jake, THE Jake, was treating her like a normal human being? Her social anxiety was spiraling.

"She's got it," Sam said, elbowing Maya. "Maya's obsessed with riddles. She's basically a genius."

Sam, the traitor.

The sphinx's riddle was something about speaking without a mouth and hearing without ears. Maya stared at it while her brain went completely blank. This was it. This was how she died of embarrassment in front of Jake and everyone.

Then she heard it—Jake humming under his breath while he traced hieroglyphics with his finger. Chloe muttering about anime plot points that somehow connected to Egyptian mythology. Sam dramatically reading the scroll like she was performing Shakespeare.

And suddenly Maya wasn't the awkward freshman anymore. She was just... part of it.

"Echo," she said, surprising herself. "The answer is echo."

The sphinx's eyes turned green. A hidden door swung open, revealing their escape.

"DAMN," Jake said, actually impressed. "That was actually sick."

Maya felt something warm in her chest that wasn't panic for once. They walked out of the escape room together, nobody checking their phones, nobody pretending to be someone they weren't. Just five random people who'd solved something impossible together.

"Same team next year?" Jake asked as they headed toward the exit.

Maya found herself smiling. "Yeah. Same team."

She'd still accidentally like Jake's old Instagram posts. She'd still stay up too late and feel like a zombie at school. But maybe—just maybe—she didn't have to do everything alone.
