The Night the Zombies Danced
Lily was a spy. At least, that's what she called herself when she wore her dad's old floppy hat and crept around the garden at twilight. Her mission: discover why her grandmother's spinach patch kept glowing at night.
One Tuesday, as the stars blinked awake, Lily crouched behind the pumpkin patch. She adjusted her spy hat and gasped. A little zombie—no bigger than a teddy bear—was wobbling through the rows! He had green skin like fresh leaves and buttons for eyes.
"What are you doing?" Lily whispered, stepping out from her hiding spot.
The zombie jumped. "Oh! A human!" He pulled something from his pocket—a sparkling orange bottle. "I'm Zoggy. I'm collecting moonlight vitamins for the wilted vegetables. They need extra energy to dance at midnight!"
Lily's eyes widened. "Vegetables... dance?"
"Every night!" Zoggy grinned, showing a missing tooth. "But only if they've had their vitamins. See, ordinary spinach is just spinach. But spinach with moonlight vitamins becomes MAGIC spinach. It helps zombie vegetables come alive and twirl!"
He handed her a glowing green leaf. "Want to try?"
Lily nibbled it. Suddenly, her toes tingled. Her hat began to sparkle, and before she knew it, she was twirling through the garden alongside a smiling pumpkin, a breakdancing carrot, and Zoggy, who did a funny little wiggle.
They danced under the stars until the moon drifted low. "Thank you, Lily," Zoggy said, bowing. "You're the first human who's ever joined our party. Being brave and kind makes the best magic of all."
As dawn approached, the vegetables settled back into their beds, looking perfectly ordinary again. But Lily knew better.
Now every night, she puts on her spy hat and visits her magical friends. She learned that wonderful surprises hide everywhere, even in a simple garden. Sometimes the most unlikely friendships are the most wonderful of all.
