The Night the Toys Woke Up
Leo lay in bed, watching the storm outside his window. Lightning flashed across the sky, making his room glow purple and blue. His cat, Whiskers, sat on the windowsill, tail twitching with each rumble of thunder.
"I wish I had something fun to do," Leo sighed. He'd already used his iPhone to play all his games. Now it was plugged into the wall with its white cable, charging for tomorrow. Boring.
Whiskers meowed and jumped onto Leo's pillow, then batted at something on the floor. It was Leo's old toy zombie—a plastic figure with green skin and one googly eye. Leo hadn't played with it in months.
Suddenly, the biggest lightning bolt yet flashed outside. CRACK! The lights flickered. The iPhone's cord glowed bright green. And something magical happened.
The toy zombie sat up. Its googly eye spun. "Hello there!" it squeaked in a tiny voice.
Leo gasped. Whiskers purred and rubbed against the zombie's plastic leg.
"I'm Zippy!" said the zombie. "I've been waiting for a storm like this! Lightning magic always wakes up the toys!"
Leo couldn't believe it. All around his room, toys were stirring—dancing dolls, marching soldiers, even his old stuffed bear. They'd been here all along, waiting.
"But... why now?" Leo asked.
Zippy smiled crookedly. "Because tonight, you put down your phone and looked out the window. Imagination needs room to grow! Screens are fun, but storms and stories and friends—even plastic ones—are where the real magic lives."
Leo laughed and played with Zippy and Whiskers until the storm passed. As the first morning light peeked through his curtains, Zippy grew still again. But Leo knew the secret now.
The magic wasn't gone. It was waiting—inside him, in his imagination, ready to wake up whenever he put down the phone and let wonder in.
And every time lightning flashed after that, Leo would smile. His friends were just waking up.
