The Night the Sphinx Winked

Maya's hair had officially declared independence. Between the humidity and the frizz, she looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Not exactly the vibe she wanted for Jake's party.

"You look fine," Chloe said, for the third time. "Literally no one is staring at your hair."

Maya glared at her reflection in the hallway mirror. Outside, lightning flashed, illuminating the backyard where everyone was gathered around the in-ground pool. The water glowed weirdly blue from the underwater lights, and someone—probably Drew—had set up this ridiculous sphinx statue near the diving board as a joke.

"It's not just the hair," Maya groaned. "It's the everything. The awkwardness. The fact that Jake literally high-fived me when I walked in."

Chloe snorted. "Okay, valid. But also, maybe he's just clueless? Have you considered that?"

Before Maya could respond, the back door slid open and Jake himself stumbled through, looking weirdly intense.

"Hey, Maya," he said. "You wanna come see something?"

Chloe mouthed 'GO' with terrifying enthusiasm.

Maya followed him outside, where the air smelled like chlorine and impending rain. Another lightning strike crackled across the sky, closer this time.

"So," Jake said, scratching the back of his neck. "This is gonna sound random, but my mom got that sphinx thing at a garage sale and I swear it's haunted. Like, I keep feeling like it's watching me."

Maya stared at him. "That's... that's what you wanted to show me? The haunted lawn ornament?"

"I know it sounds dumb!" Jake laughed, this awkward, genuine sound. "I just—you always notice things. In English class. Details and stuff. I thought maybe you'd see what I'm seeing. Or tell me I'm losing it."

Maya felt something weird happen in her chest. Not fluttery exactly—more like something unclenching.

"Show me the sphinx, Jake," she said.

They stood there in the drizzling rain while she made up a whole backstory about the statue's ancient curse, and Jake laughed so hard he almost fell in the pool, and her hair was a disaster and her makeup was probably running and everything was perfect.

Later, Chloe would demand details. Later, Maya would realize this was just the beginning of whatever this was. But right now, lightning flashed again, and for a second, just a second, the sphinx seemed to wink at them.
