The Night the Pumpkin Danced
Lily peered through her window as lightning flashed across the sky, turning the dark night bright purple for one magical second. In her backyard, something strange was happening.
Her dog, Barnaby, was bouncing around the family's carved pumpkin like it was the most wonderful thing he'd ever seen. Her cat, Luna, sat on the porch, watching with curious yellow eyes.
The pumpkin—an enormous orange one they'd carved for Halloween—was moving!
It rolled forward, then back, then sideways in a goofy, bumpy dance that made Lily giggle. It looked almost like a zombie pumpkin, wobbling and shambling, but in the friendliest way possible. Not scary at all—just silly and wonderful.
Lily ran outside in her pajamas. Barnaby licked her face. Luna rubbed against her legs, purring like a tiny motor.
"The lightning woke me up," the pumpkin seemed to say, though pumpkins can't really talk. Its carved smile curved up even more. "And now I want to PLAY!"
So they played. The pumpkin rolled while Barnaby chased. Luna pounced from the shadows. Lily laughed and danced in the rain. The orange glow from the pumpkin's insides made everything look like magic.
"Most things run from lightning," Luna whispered (cats can be very wise). "But the best things dance in it."
They played until the storm passed and the first stars peeked through the clouds. The pumpkin gave one last wobble and settled back on the porch, its orange face beaming in the moonlight.
"Same time next storm?" Barnaby seemed to ask with a wag of his tail.
Lily hugged both her pets and the wonderful zombie pumpkin. Sometimes, the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most magical friends of all.
That night, Lily dreamed of orange pumpkins that danced like zombies, brave dogs, and wise cats who knew that the best adventures happen when lightning strikes.
