The Night the Goldfish Spoke

Lily sat by her fishbowl, watching her orange goldfish Goldie swim in lazy circles. Outside, lightning flashed across the sky, making her room glow bright for a split second.

"I wish you could talk," Lily whispered to Goldie. "Being eleven can be lonely sometimes."

*CRACK!* Another lightning bolt struck somewhere nearby, and suddenly—

"I can," said a small voice.

Lily jumped! Goldie was floating at the top of the bowl, looking at her with sparkly eyes. "You can talk?!"

"Only during magic storms," Goldie said. "And I have something amazing to show you. But first, we need to wake him up."

"Him?"

Goldie swished her tail toward Lily's bed. There lay Zom-B, her stuffed zombie doll with green stitching and one button eye. He was supposed to be scary, but Lily thought he was cute.

*ZAP!* Lightning flashed again, and Zom-B sat up! His button eye twinkled.

"Hello, friend!" Zom-B said in a friendly, rumbly voice. "I've been waiting for a magic storm!"

Lily couldn't believe it. Her toys were coming to life!

"What's happening?" she asked.

"Magic," Goldie said mysteriously. "Real magic. And there's more! Come to the kitchen!"

Lily followed her swimming goldfish (who was somehow floating beside her) and her zombie doll down the hall. In the kitchen, something amazing was happening.

The oranges in the fruit bowl were glowing. Not just shining—glowing with golden light!

"Pick one," Goldie said. "But only one. Magic oranges grant one wish each."

Lily's heart raced. She could wish for anything! A new bike? A puppy? Infinite candy?

Then she looked at her iPhone on the counter. She opened it and started recording. "I want to remember this forever," she said.

"That's your wish?" Zom-B asked. "Not toys or adventures?"

"This night IS the adventure," Lily said. "And you two are the best friends I could ask for."

The glowing orange dimmed but didn't go dark. Goldie smiled. "You chose friendship over greed. That's the truest magic of all."

Lily ate the magical orange. It tasted like sunshine and stardust.

The next morning, her parents thought she'd dreamed everything. But Lily knew better. Goldie still gave her knowing looks. Zom-B seemed to smile sometimes. And lightning storms? They became her favorite weather.

Some magic, Lily learned, doesn't need to be seen to be real. The best magic lives in your heart, in friendship, and in the memories you keep forever—safely saved on your phone, and even more safely, tucked away in your dreams.
