The Night the Goldfish Ran

Lily's goldfish, Finnegan, lived in a sparkling blue bowl on her nightstand. Every night, Lily pressed her nose against the glass and whispered stories about her day at the community pool, where she splashed and played with her friends.

"I love swimming," she told Finnegan. "The water feels like a big, cool hug!"

Finnegan would dance in circles, his orange scales catching the lamplight. But secretly, he wondered: What would it feel like to swim in something bigger than a bowl? Something vast and magical?

One full-moon night, something extraordinary happened. Lily's mother left the window open, and a beam of moonlight touched Finnegan's bowl. Suddenly, Finnegan felt tingles all through his gills. He grew—bigger and bigger—until he flopped right out of his bowl!

But instead of flopping on the carpet, Finnegan found himself standing on two tiny fins! He could walk! He could run!

"The pool!" he thought, and dashed out the open door on his magical fins.

Running felt nothing like swimming. The ground was hard, the wind rushed past his face, and his heart pounded like tiny drumbeats. He ran past fireflies that winked at him, over sidewalks that shimmered like silver rivers, until he saw it—the community pool, glowing under the stars.

Finnegan leaped into the cool water with a joyful splash!

The pool was enchanted at night. The water sparkled with tiny stars, and the ripples whispered melodies. Finnegan swam deeper than he ever could in his bowl. He met frogs who told riddles and water beetles who danced. But as the moon began to lower, Finnegan grew smaller and smaller.

"I must return," he realized.

Exhausted but happy, Finnegan ran back home, his fins carrying him swiftly. As morning light painted the sky, he squeezed back into his bowl just as Lily's eyes fluttered open.

"Finnegan!" she gasped. "You're covered in... stardust?"

And there, clinging to his orange scales, was a tiny speck of magical pool glitter that never washed away.

From that night on, Finnegan knew: Adventures are wonderful, but home is where your heart swims safest. And Lily? She never knew how her goldfish had the most magical adventure of all.
