The Night the Cat Could Fly
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunbeams, Mittens spent her days perched on the windowsill, watching the goldfish bowl with big amber eyes.
"Bloop," went the goldfish, bubbles rising to the surface.
"Meow," answered Mittens, pressing her paw against the glass.
Every day, they played this game—the curious orange cat and the tiny goldfish with shimmering scales like dropped pennies. Mittens would tap the glass, and the goldfish would dance in happy circles.
One stormy evening, as rain pattered against the window, something magical happened. A flash of lightning streaked across the dark sky—purple and blue and crackling with energy. But this wasn't ordinary lightning. It was **lightning** the color of dreams.
When the magical bolt struck near the windowsill, something extraordinary occurred. The glass fishbowl began to glow, and suddenly, Mittens could hear a tiny voice.
"Thank you for visiting me every day," said the **goldfish**, whose scales now shimmered with rainbow light. "I'm actually a magical fish named Finnegan, trapped by a grumpy wizard's spell. Your friendship has given me the power to grant one wish."
Mittens couldn't believe it! She could talk to Finnegan!
"I've always wished I could fly like the birds I watch from the window," Mittens said wistfully.
Finnegan smiled, his fins waving like tiny flags. "Then fly you shall, brave friend!"
With a sparkle of magic dust, Mittens felt light as a feather. She rose into the air, floating around the room as the **cat** discovered she could glide and soar like the birds she'd always envied.
Outside, she flew through the starry night, dancing among clouds and chasing fireflies. But as dawn approached, Mittens realized something important. Flying was wonderful, but what she truly loved was her daily visits with Finnegan.
"I wish to be normal again," Mittens told Finnegan upon returning. "Because the real magic isn't flying—it's having a friend who understands you."
Finnegan's spell dissolved, and the goldfish returned to his bowl, now free from the wizard's curse. And though Mittens could no longer fly, something even better had happened: she and Finnegan could talk together whenever they wanted, sharing stories and friendship.
And every stormy night, when purple lightning flashed across the sky, they would remember the magical evening when a cat learned that some wishes come true, but the best magic of all is a friend who truly sees you.
