The Night the Bear Crashed the Party

poolswimmingbear

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, toes curling against concrete. Everyone else was already swimming—Jake doing cannonballs off the diving board, Sarah and Chen floating on inflatables, the water alive with laughter and splashes. But Maya just stood there, clutching her towel like a shield.

"You coming in or what?" Jake called, dripping wet. "Water's perfect!"

"Yeah, um, just gotta—"

"Maya doesn't swim," said Brianna, her voice sharp. "She told me last week."

The pool went quiet. Not like, awkward silence—worse. The kind where everyone's looking at you with that mix of confusion and judgment. Maya felt her face burn. She was fifteen. Who didn't know how to swim at fifteen?

"I just..." she started, but the words died.

Then something moved at the edge of the yard.

At first Maya thought it was a dog. Big, dark, shaggy. Then it raised its head and sniffed the air, and the entire pool party froze.

A bear.

A literal bear, padding through someone's suburban backyard like it owned the place.

For three seconds, nobody breathed. The bear blinked at the pool, at the teenagers frozen mid-splash, and then—it lumbered toward the water.

"GET OUT OF THE POOL!" someone screamed.

Water erupted everywhere. Jake vaulted over the side, Sarah abandoned her flamingo float, bodies scrambling up the concrete. Maya found herself shoved forward by the crush, and suddenly—she was falling.

Water closed over her head. Cool, shocking, everywhere. Panic seized her chest. She couldn't breathe, couldn't find the surface, her limbs flailing uselessly. This was it. This was how she'd die. Drowning at a pool party while a bear watched.

Then fingers grabbed her wrist, hauled her up. She broke the surface, gasping, and found herself looking into Jake's terrified eyes.

"You okay?"

She nodded, still coughing.

The bear had reached the pool's edge. It dipped one massive paw in,搅动了水,然后咕哝了一声,转身消失在夜色中。
