The Night Lightning Struck Twice

Maya's palms were sweating literal rivers as she stood outside Tyler's house, clutching a bag of baby spinach like it was a life preserver. Her mom's latest health obsession meant Maya couldn't show up empty-handed, even at a supposed rager.

"You're overthinking it," said Skylar, adjusting their fake ID. "Just be cool. Channel your inner fox."

"Fox?" Maya raised an eyebrow. "Since when are foxes the epitome of cool?"

"Sly. Clever. Adaptability." Skylar shrugged. "Now let's go before I lose my nerve."

Inside, the party was everything Maya feared: too loud, too many people she barely knew from school, and someone had already spilled something on the carpet. Tyler spotted them immediately, his smile faltering when he saw the spinach.

"Uh, thanks?" He took the bag, looking genuinely confused. "My mom's been trying to get me to eat greens since... forever."

Maya wanted to disappear. But then—CRACK. Lightning split the sky outside, and the house went dark. Someone screamed. Tyler grabbed Maya's hand instinctively.

"Cable's out," someone groaned. "No WiFi either."

And just like that, the party transformed. Tyler grabbed his acoustic guitar, someone found a portable speaker, and suddenly they were all sitting around the living room, phones glowing like fireflies. Tyler kept holding Maya's hand, and her heart was doing cartwheels.

"So," he whispered, "you like spinach?"

Maya laughed. "Only when my mom forces me to carry it around as a social lubricant."

Tyler grinned. "Good. Because I was thinking maybe we could grab actual food sometime? Like, food people actually want to eat?"

Another flash of lightning illuminated his face, and Maya saw something real there—uncertainty, hope, maybe even fear. She squeezed his palm back.

"I'd like that," she said.

Outside, the storm raged on, but inside, something else was beginning. And somewhere, Maya's inner fox was absolutely preening.
