The Night Lightning Came Swimming

Lily was terrified of the pool. Every Saturday, her parents brought her to the community swimming center, and every Saturday, she refused to get in the water. The other kids splashed and played, but Lily sat on the edge, dangling her feet in the cool blue water, too scared to join them.

One afternoon, a thunderstorm rolled through town. Swimming lessons were cancelled, but Lily's dad had to pick something up from the community center. Lily waited in the car, watching raindrops race down the windows.

Suddenly, a brilliant flash of lightning illuminated the dark sky, followed by a rumble of thunder.

What Lily saw next made her gasp.

From the storm clouds descended a creature made entirely of crackling electricity—a Lightning Sprite! It zipped and zoomed through the rain, leaving a trail of sparks. The sprite seemed lost, its brilliant glow dimming as it tumbled toward the ground.

Lily jumped out of the car and ran to the pool area. The Lightning Sprite splashed into the water with a spectacular sizzle! But instead of disappearing, the sprite began to swim—its electrical body turning the water into shimmering ripples of light.

The sprite looked sad. It kept trying to fly back to the sky but couldn't escape the water's surface. Lily remembered what her instructor had said about swimming: "The water will hold you up if you trust it."

She took a deep breath and slid into the pool. To her surprise, she didn't sink. The water cradled her gently, like a supportive friend.

"Don't be afraid," Lily told the Lightning Sprite. "I'll help you." She moved her arms and legs exactly as she'd learned in lessons, discovering that swimming felt natural, almost magical. She guided the sprite toward the pool's edge, where it could launch itself back toward the clouds.

Just then, another bolt of lightning struck the sky, and the sprite's friends arrived—a whole family of Lightning Swimmers! They created a dazzling display of gratitude, forming shapes in the storm clouds above: a heart, a star, and finally the outline of a swimming fish.

Lily's dad returned to find her beaming with pride, hair wet and confidence soaring. The next Saturday, she was the first one in the pool, ready to swim.

And sometimes, during summer storms, Lily would spot sparkles dancing in the rain—her lightning friends, reminding her that courage, like friendship, can come from the most unexpected places.
