The Night Lightning Brought Friends

Lily hugged her brown teddy bear tight as thunder shook her bedroom window. Rain tapped against the glass like tiny fingers wanting to come inside.

Suddenly, a bright flash of lightning lit up the whole room. CRACK! The thunder sounded like a giant's footsteps.

But something magical happened. When the lightning flashed, Lily's bear twitched. His button eyes blinked.

"Lily?" said the bear in a fuzzy, warm voice. "I'm Boris. You've hugged me every night since you were three. Tonight, the lightning magic woke me up."

Lily gasped. "You're alive!"

"Only for tonight," Boris said. "Lightning magic doesn't last long. Let's have an adventure!"

They tiptoed downstairs to the backyard. The rain had stopped, and puddles reflected the moon like hundreds of tiny mirrors.

Then they heard it: a soft groan from behind the garden shed.

"What's that?" Lily whispered, clutching Boris's paw.

A shuffling figure emerged. It was green and bumpy, with stitches all over like a patchwork quilt. A zombie!

Lily wanted to run, but Boris squeezed her hand. "Wait. Look at its eyes."

The zombie's eyes were kind and sad. It held out a hand—no, a paw. It was a zombie stuffed animal, half its stuffing gone, loose threads hanging everywhere.

"I'm Zombear," it said in a raspy voice. "The neighborhood dog got me last summer. My girl threw me away. I've been hiding ever since."

Lily's heart broke. "That's terrible!"

"I just wanted a friend," Zombear sniffled. "But everyone runs away when they see me."

"Not us," Lily said firmly. "Boris, can your lightning magic fix him?"

Boris thought for a moment. "Together, maybe!"

Lily, Boris, and Zombear held hands (and paws). The next lightning flash, Boris closed his eyes and concentrated. Sparkles flew from his fur like golden fireflies. They swirled around Zombear, mending the tears, replacing lost stuffing with shimmering clouds, making his fur soft and brown again.

"I'm whole!" Zombear cheered, dancing in the moonlight.

"You're beautiful," Lily smiled. "Want to come live with us?"

"Really?" Zombear's eyes sparkled like stars.

"Really," said Boris. "Every good adventure needs three friends."

As dawn approached, Boris whispered, "The magic is fading. But I'll always be here when you need me, Lily. And now Zombear is part of our family."

Lily carried two bears back to her room that morning. Sometimes the scariest things just need a little love—and sometimes lightning storms bring the best gifts of all.
