The Night Everything Sparkled
Lily pressed her eye to the hole in the garden fence. She was on a secret mission — the best **spy** in the whole neighborhood. Her golden retriever, Buster, watched with his tail wagging.
"Shh, Buster! We have to be quiet," Lily whispered.
Her little brother Sam was staggering around the backyard with his arms out straight. "I'm a **zombie**!" he groaned, and then collapsed in a fit of giggles. Lily rolled her eyes. Brothers!
Suddenly, the sky turned dark purple. **Lightning** flashed across the clouds like golden ribbons. Rain began to fall, sparkling like tiny diamonds.
Lily and Buster ran to the old willow tree for shelter. Under its drooping branches, they found something amazing. The ground was glowing. Not scary glowing — beautiful, magical glowing, like someone had sprinkled starlight on the grass.
Then Lily saw them. Fireflies! Hundreds of them, floating slowly through the air. They moved so strangely, like they were dancing in a dream.
Buster barked happily and chased after them. The fireflies didn't fly away. Instead, they landed on his nose, his paws, his golden fur. Her loyal **dog** looked like a glowing magical creature!
Lily laughed and stepped forward. The fireflies landed on her too — on her hands, her hair, her shoulders. She felt warm and tingly all over, like she was filled with sunshine.
Suddenly, the fireflies began to move toward the old pond behind the willow tree. Lily and Buster followed.
The pond was glowing too! And in the water, Lily saw something amazing. The fireflies were going for a swim! They skittered across the water's surface like tiny boats, leaving trails of light behind them.
Lily wanted to join them. She dipped her toe in the water. It felt warm, like a bath. She looked at Buster.
"Should we go **swimming**, Buster?"
Buster gave a happy bark and SPLASH! jumped right in. Lily laughed and jumped in too.
The water was magical. They could breathe underwater! Lily saw fish made of light swimming around them. The fireflies created a beautiful underwater world.
They played until the storm passed. When the sun came out, the fireflies flew up into the sky and disappeared like bubbles.
Lily and Buster walked home, their hair still shimmering with tiny sparkles. Lily knew this would be their secret forever — the night they discovered a magical world, all because of a summer storm.
From that day on, whenever it rained, Lily and Buster would run to the willow tree, hoping for another adventure. But even if the magic never came back exactly the same way, Lily learned something wonderful: the best adventures find you when you least expect them.
And sometimes, the most magical things are hiding right in your own backyard.
