The Night Everything Changed

Maya pressed her back against the rough oak tree, heart hammering like she'd just chugged three espresso shots. She couldn't believe she was actually doing this—being a total creep, spying on Tyler's lake party from behind someone's backyard fence like some loser in a teen movie.

She'd been lowkey stalking his Instagram stories for weeks, watching him live his perfect varsity lacrosse captain life while she sat in her room overthinking every interaction they'd had since seventh grade. Tonight was different though. Tonight she was actually going to talk to him. Hopefully. If her anxiety didn't make her literally pass out first.

The bonfire crackled in the distance. She could hear laughter and the bass of whatever Spotify playlist was blasting. This was it. Her moment to stop being the quiet girl who always watched from the sidelines.

But then she saw him—Tyler, standing near the fire with that effortless smile that made her stomach do backflips. And next to him was Jess. Pretty, popular Jess, who'd been flirting with him all week at school. Maya felt like she couldn't bear it. Like someone had reached inside her chest and squeezed all the air from her lungs.

What was she even thinking? She wasn't supposed to be here. She wasn't part of that world.

Just as she turned to leave, she felt it—a sudden spark, like lightning striking somewhere deep inside her. Not literally, obviously, but that electric moment when you realize you're done being afraid. Done watching everyone else live their lives while you stood on the sidelines.

She wasn't here to spy anymore. She was here to exist. To take up space.

Maya straightened her snapback, took a deep breath, and walked toward the fire. Tyler looked up, their eyes met across the crowd, and something shifted. The noise faded to background. Just her and this moment she'd been building up in her head for literally forever.

"Hey," she said, voice steadier than she felt. "I brought s'mores supplies. Because apparently that's my personality now."

Tyler laughed, and it was better than she'd imagined. "You're literally a lifesaver. We were just talking about how someone needed to step up and be the s'mores hero."

Maya grinned. Maybe tonight wouldn't be the disaster she'd expected. Maybe it would be the beginning of everything.
