The Night Everything Changed

Maya's thumbs flew across her iPhone screen, doom-scrolling through TikToks at 2 AM. Another night of FOMO while her friends were at that party—the one she hadn't been invited to. Again.

She slipped out the back door, running until her lungs burned, her Converse slapping against the empty sidewalk. Running from the notification, running from the feeling that she'd never catch up to everyone else.

That's when she saw it—a fox, sleek and amber, frozen in the glow of a streetlamp. It stared at her with eyes that seemed to hold ancient secrets. Then it bolted, and somehow Maya found herself following.

The fox led her to Old Man Miller's backyard, where a rusted Sphinx statue sat beside a koi pond, weirdly majestic among the overgrown weeds. Miller's cat, Sphinx, a hairless wonder with piercing eyes, sat perched on the stone creature's shoulder like it owned the place.

"Weird place for a midnight rendezvous, isn't it?"

Maya jumped. A boy with messy curls and galaxy-painted nails leaned against the fence, sketchbook in hand. Leo, from her art class. The one she'd been too scared to talk to all semester.

"The fox brought me here," she said, then immediately regretted it. Sounded unhinged.

Leo grinned. "Same. Third time this week. I think it's trying to tell us something."

He sat beside the statue, and somehow Maya ended up there too. They talked until dawn—about art, about how high school felt like a performance, about how neither of them felt like they belonged in anyone's story.

Her iPhone buzzed somewhere in her pocket. Maya ignored it.

The fox reappeared at sunrise, as if to check its work. Sphinx the cat made a weird chirping sound, like approval.

"We should probably go," Leo said. "But... want to come back tomorrow?"

Maya smiled, something real unfurling in her chest. "Definitely."

She'd never felt less like running away.
