The Neon Hat Summer

Maya stared at her reflection, the neon pink bucket **hat** covering half her face. Perfect. Exactly what she needed for Tyler's pool party—looking like a walking fruit explosion. But when your hair decides to rebel the morning of the biggest social event of sophomore year, you make questionable life choices.

"You're wearing that?" Her younger brother Leo leaned in the doorway, holding out her daily **vitamin** gummies. "Seriously?"

"Shut up, Leo." She snatched the gummies and stuffed them in her pocket. "It's vintage. It's a vibe. It's—"

"It's extra," he deadpanned.

Maya arrived at Tyler's house to chaos. People were everywhere, some already in the **water**, others hanging around the snack table where someone's mom had thoughtfully arranged tropical fruit. Including **papaya**. Because nothing says cool teenager like exotic fruit you can't pronounce without feeling pretentious.

Then she saw him.

Caleb stood near the pool, laughing at something Tyler said. His hair was damp, droplets clinging to his jawline, and Maya's brain short-circuited. She'd been crushing on him since October, and they'd exchanged approximately three sentences total.

"Maya!" Chloe waved from the edge of the pool. "Get in here!"

Before Maya could respond, Derek pushed past her. He'd been acting weird all week—overeager, constantly flexing, talking about how he'd almost fought someone at the park.

"Yo, Caleb!" Derek shouted. "My cousin said he could take you in a fight. No offense." He smirked like he'd just dropped the world's most impressive burn.

Caleb barely glanced up. "That's **bull**, man. We both know it."

"What'd you say?" Derek stepped closer.

Maya's heart hammered. This was it—Derek was going to ruin everything, make a scene, and she'd spend the rest of high school known as the girl with the ridiculous hat whose cousin caused a fight at a pool party.

She moved without thinking, stepping between them.

"Derek," she said, voice shaking. "Caleb. Let's not.

"Your cousin's talking **bull**," Caleb said, but something in his expression softened. "But whatever." He picked up a papaya wedge from the platter. "Want one? They're actually not bad."

Derek blinked, deflated. "Uh. Sure."

And just like that, the tension dissolved. They stood there eating papaya like absolute weirdos while Tyler's little sister did cannonballs into the pool.

Later, Maya found herself sitting next to Caleb on the patio steps, hat-free, drying off in the sun.

"So," he said, grinning. "Nice hat earlier."

"Oh my god, please don't."

"No, seriously." He bumped her shoulder. "It was bold. I like bold."

Maya's cheeks burned, but for the first time all day, she didn't mind. Sometimes the worst choices lead to the best moments—and sometimes you have to wear a ridiculous hat to find out who's worth taking it off for.
