The Neighborhood Watch Cat

catspyfriend

Maya's summer had been basically a flop until her mom decided she needed "more responsibility" and signed her up for the neighborhood watch program. Lame, right? But then she met Whiskers, this calico cat who belonged to the weird elderly neighbor, Mrs. Chen, and everything kind of shifted.

Every day at 3 PM, Whiskers would appear at Maya's bedroom window with something in her mouth. At first, Maya thought it was just dead mice or whatever, but no—this cat was bringing her actual stuff. A hair tie. A shiny button. A gum wrapper. Then one day, Whiskers dropped a crumpled note on Maya's windowsill.

"Room 304. Midnight. Come alone."

Maya's heart basically stopped. Was she about to become part of some secret society? Or was this just a super elaborate prank? Either way, she wasn't about to sleep on the opportunity to finally have something interesting happen.

That night, Maya crept out of her house (seriously nerve-wracking—her mom would literally kill her if she caught her sneaking out). She followed Whiskers down the street, the cat moving like she owned the entire neighborhood. They stopped at the abandoned apartment building at the end of the block, the one everyone said was haunted or whatever.

The cat led her to a basement window, where Maya could see light flickering inside. She peeked through—and saw three kids from her school sitting around a laptop, looking super stressed.

"What is this?" Maya whispered, climbing through the window.

All three kids jumped like they'd seen a ghost. "Whoa! You're the new recruit?" said a guy with messy dark hair. "We've been waiting for you."

Turns out, these weren't spies or criminals or anything cool like that. They were just a group of students who'd been secretly feeding and caring for Whiskers and several other stray cats in the neighborhood, because Mrs. Chen had dementia and couldn't remember to feed her own cat anymore. The "secret meetings" were just them planning cat food schedules and vet visits.

"We call ourselves the Cat Protection Squad," explained a girl with bright blue streaks in her hair. "We needed someone who could cover the morning shift, and Whiskers chose you."

Maya felt kind of silly for imagining spy missions and secret codes, but as they all sat there planning the next week's cat care schedule, she realized this was actually better than any fictional adventure. She'd found a friend group that cared about something real, something that mattered. And okay, maybe being a cat spy wasn't exactly what she'd imagined, but saving innocent lives? That was pretty heroic anyway.

By the time school started again, Maya had something most people never found: a crew, a purpose, and a cat who'd somehow become the best friend she'd ever had.
