The Mystery of Midnight Field
Lily tiptoed across her bedroom floor, clutching her dad's old iphone. The moon glowed through her window as she slipped outside, her golden retriever Max bounding excitedly beside her. Tonight was the night of the Great backyard adventure!
They reached the dusty baseball diamond at the edge of the woods. Lily had discovered something amazing last week – her iphone camera could see things that weren't there! Through the screen, shimmering figures played baseball under the moonlight.
"Who are they?" Lily whispered, watching the ghostly players.
Suddenly, a slow-moving figure shambled from the woods. It was green and lumpy, with arms that wobbled like jelly. Max growled softly.
"A zombie!" Lily gasped. But then she looked closer through her iphone screen. The zombie wasn't scary at all – he wore a dusty baseball cap and held a glove. He just wanted to play!
The zombie pointed at Lily's iphone and made a motion like typing. Then he mimed looking around sneakily.
"You're a spy!" Lily realized. "You're watching over the field!"
The zombie nodded sadly. No one could see him except through her magical phone. He'd been the ballpark guardian for fifty years, ever since he was a boy named Charlie who loved baseball more than anything.
Lily's heart swelled. Every Saturday, she returned with Max, becoming the zombie's secret friend. She told him about her day, and he taught her ghostly baseball tricks through the screen. Sometimes he'd make funny faces that made her laugh until her sides hurt.
One evening, the zombie faded slightly, looking tired. Lily knew what she had to do. She took a photo of him with her iphone, then another – smiling, throwing a ball, tipping his cap.
"Now you'll never be forgotten," she promised.
The zombie smiled, his form glowing warm and golden. He wasn't fading anymore – her friendship had made him stronger.
Lily learned that magic exists everywhere, even in old iphones and dusty baseball fields. And sometimes the scariest-looking things just need a friend to show their true colors. Max barked agreement, and together they watched their ghostly friend hit a home run under the stars.
