The Moonlit Pool

poolfriendbear

Lily couldn't sleep. The summer moon glowed through her window, calling her outside like a whisper. She tiptoed past her parents' room and slipped into the backyard, where something magical sparkled near the old oak tree.

A pool of moonlight had collected on the grass, shimmering like liquid silver. But this was no ordinary patch of light — it rippled and flowed like water, even though the ground was dry. Lily knelt beside it, her heart pounding with wonder.

"Hello?" she whispered.

The pool rippled again. Something splashed beneath the surface, sending ripples of silver dancing across the grass. Then, to Lily's astonishment, a small nose poked through the moonlight. Followed by two fuzzy ears. And finally, a wet, shaggy head.

A bear cub climbed out of the moonlight pool, its fur dripping with stardust. It shook itself, and droplets of silver sprayed Lily's arms, tingling like magic. The bear was only the size of a large puppy, with round, friendly eyes that twinkled like the stars above.

"I'm Jasper," the bear said, in a voice that sounded like leaves rustling.

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"Only in the moonlight pool," Jasper explained. "I've been waiting for a friend to visit me. I've been lonely for so very long."

Lily's eyes filled with tears. She was lonely too. She'd just moved to this town and hadn't made any friends at school yet.

"I'm Lily," she said softly.

Jasper nudged her hand with his wet nose. "Would you like to see where the pool goes?"

He took her paw — his was warm and fuzzy, hers was small and nervous. Together they stepped into the moonlight pool. But instead of getting wet, they found themselves sliding through a tunnel of stars, laughing as they tumbled through galaxies of blue and purple.

They landed in a meadow filled with fireflies and moon-flowers that glowed like lanterns. Other animals waited there — rabbits with silver fur, owls with starry wings, deer with coats like rainbows. All of them had been lonely once, until they found the moonlight pool and made friends who understood them.

Lily and Jasper played until dawn, chasing fireflies and sharing stories. When the first golden ray of sunlight touched the meadow, Jasper looked sad.

"I have to go back now," he said. "But you'll visit again, won't you? You're my best friend."

Lily hugged him tight. "Every night. I promise."

She woke up in her bed, the morning sun streaming through her window. Had it all been a dream? But then she saw it — a single silver hair on her pillow, shimmering like stardust.

That night, Lily couldn't wait for the moon to rise. She ran to the backyard, and there it was — the moonlight pool, shimmering like magic. Jasper was waiting.

And every night after that, Lily and her best friend would splash through the starry pool, having adventures that only true friends could share.

Lily learned that sometimes the best friends are the ones you find when you're not looking for them — even if they happen to be magical bears who live in moonlight pools. And she was never lonely again, not as long as she had her friend by the pool.
