The Moonlit Pond Game

Lily loved spending summer evenings at Grandmother's house, especially when the fireflies danced above the old pond. Tonight, something magical sparkled in the moonlight.

Buster, her golden **dog**, trotted ahead, his tail wagging like a metronome. He always knew when adventure was near. Following him through the meadow, Lily discovered something impossible: a **baseball** field glowing softly on the pond's surface, the bases floating like lily pads.

"How is this possible?" Lily whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.

From the cattails emerged Mittens, the neighbor's tabby **cat**, wearing a tiny silver whistle. "Welcome to the Moonlight League," Mittens purred, her voice chiming like bells. "We play when humans sleep. The winner gets to make one wish come true."

Lily's heart soared. She'd always wished for a best friend who loved adventure as much as she did.

"But I can't play on water!" Lily said.

Mittens smiled mysteriously. "In the Moonlight League, **swimming** and baseball are the same game. The water holds you up when you believe."

Lily stepped onto the first base—a lily pad that felt firm beneath her feet. Buster swam happily beside her, acting as her teammate. Mittens pitched glowing moonballs that sailed through the air like shooting stars.

Something magical happened with every hit. Each time Lily connected with the moonball, she forgot about being shy at school, forgot about having no one to sit with at lunch. She just played, laughing as Buster splashed and Mittens cheered.

When the final moonball sailed into the net made of stardust, Lily had won.

"Your wish," Mittens said gently.

Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—endless summer, never-ending ice cream, or even a castle. But she looked at Buster, happily paddling beside her, and at Mittens, who had become her friend.

"I wish that everyone could find magic in unexpected places," Lily said. "And that no one ever has to feel lonely."

The pond shimmered brighter than ever. When Lily woke up in her bed the next morning, a silver whistle lay on her nightstand, and outside her window, a new friend waved hello, holding a baseball glove.

Sometimes, she learned, the best wishes are the ones that include everyone.
