The Moonlight Zombie Mystery

zombiepalmspy

Leo pressed his eye against his cardboard spy tube, watching the backyard with fierce concentration. At seven years old, he was the most serious spy in the whole neighborhood. His mission: discover why the moon kept disappearing from the sky behind the big palm tree.

Tonight, the moon had vanished again. Leo crept across the grass, his spy tube pointed forward like a detective's magnifying glass. As he approached the palm tree, he heard something strange—a soft, sleepy munching sound.

"Who goes there?" Leo whispered, trying to sound brave.

The palm tree's lowest frond shook, and something small and gray tumbled out. Leo gasped. It looked like a tiny person, but with silvery skin and hair made of moonlight.

"I'm a moon zombie," the creature said sheepishly. "But don't worry! I'm not scary. I just collect fallen moonbeams."

Leo lowered his spy tube. "A zombie? But zombies are... scary."

"Not moon zombies!" The creature did a little spin, and moonbeams sparkled from her fingertips. "We're guardians of lost light. When pieces of the moon fall to earth, we gather them so the moon never stops shining."

Leo's eyes widened. "That's amazing! I'm Leo, professional spy."

"I'm Zara." She held out her hand, and tiny silver dust drifted from her palm. "I've been borrowing your palm tree because it's the perfect moon-catching tree."

Leo understood now. The moon wasn't disappearing—it was just hiding behind the palm tree while Zara worked.

"Can I help?" Leo asked.

Zara smiled, and her whole body glowed softly. "Real spies know when to keep secrets, but they also know when to make friends. Would you like to be my moonlight assistant?"

Leo grinned so wide his cheeks hurt. Together, they gathered fallen moonbeams from the palm tree's leaves. Each moonbeam they collected floated back up to the sky, making the moon glow brighter.

"The best adventures," Zara said gently, "are the ones we share with friends."

That night, Leo learned that sometimes the most wonderful discoveries aren't mysteries to solve, but friends to make. And every night after, the little spy and the moon zombie met under the palm tree, keeping the moon shining bright for the whole world to see.
